Summary

Trifolium willdenovii, commonly known as Tomcat Clover, is an annual herb in the pea family Fabaceae, native to grasslands and open areas from Western Canada to Mexico. It typically grows in open, grassy areas, often in serpentine soils, which are high in magnesium and low in calcium, and thus supports a unique plant community. Tomcat Clover reaches a modest height of up to 12 inches (30 cm) and features trifoliate leaves and dense, spherical flower heads that are purple to pink, blooming from March to June. The flowers are attractive to a variety of pollinators, including bees.

Tomcat Clover is valued for its ornamental flowers and its ability to thrive in poor soils, making it a potential candidate for restoration projects and wildflower meadows. It is also used in native plant gardens and as a cover crop in agriculture due to its nitrogen-fixing abilities, which improve soil fertility. This species prefers full sun to light shade and requires little water once established, making it suitable for xeriscaping. While it is not commonly affected by diseases, it can be outcompeted by invasive grasses.CC BY-SA 4.0
