Summary

Trillium undulatum, commonly known as Painted Trillium, is a deciduous perennial herb native to cool, moist, acidic woodlands and forest understories throughout the Eastern United States and Canada. It typically grows to a height of 15-45 cm (6-18 inches) and spreads slowly by means of an underground rhizome. The plant features a single, showy flower with three white petals, each adorned with a distinctive wavy edge and a central red to reddish-purple splotch at the base, blooming from late April to June. Following successful pollination, it produces a berry-like capsule, 1 to 2 cm long, ripening to bright red by mid to late summer, which is unique among North American Trillium species.

Painted Trillium is valued for its striking flowers and is often used in shade gardens, woodland plantings, and naturalized areas. It requires strongly acidic, humus-rich soil and thrives in the shade of acid-loving trees. It prefers partial to full shade and is a relatively low-maintenance but may take several years to establish and bloom. Gardeners should note that this plant can be sensitive to transplanting and soil disturbance. It is not typically associated with serious diseases or pests, but its habitat requirements must be met for successful cultivation.CC BY-SA 4.0
