Estimated Native Range
Summary
Trixis californica, commonly known as American Threefold, is an evergreen subshrub or shrub native to arid and semi-arid regions, including desert scrub, chaparral, and open woodlands in the Southwestern USA and Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters) and spreads to a similar width. The plant has a sprawling habit with lance-shaped (lanceolate), dark green leaves that are 2–11 cm long and 0.5–3 cm wide. The bright yellow flowers are grouped in heads with about 15 flowers each, forming a terminal inflorescence that can be a panicle or corymb, and sometimes the heads are borne singly at the tips of branches. Flowering occurs mainly from February to October, but in mild winters, it may bloom nearly year-round.
American Threefold is valued for its drought tolerance and vibrant yellow flowers, which can add color to xeriscapes and rock gardens. It is commonly used in low-water-use landscapes, as a border plant, or for naturalistic plantings. This species thrives in full sun and requires minimal water once established, making it suitable for gardeners seeking low-maintenance plants. It prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types, from sandy to loamy. While generally pest-free, it can occasionally suffer from root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
