Summary

Tulipa sprengeri, commonly known as Sprenger’s Tulip, is a deciduous perennial bulb native to the temperate regions of Turkey. It reaches a height of 2 feet and a width of 0.5 feet. This species is notable for its striking red flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer, making it one of the last tulips to flower. The flowers are particularly showy, adding a splash of color to the garden when many other spring bulbs have finished blooming.

Sprenger’s Tulip is valued for its ease of cultivation and ability to naturalize in suitable conditions. It self-seeds readily, with seeds requiring stratification to germinate. The plant reaches the flowering stage within four years. It thrives in a sunny to semi-shady location, avoiding excessively hot conditions. For optimal growth, bulbs should be planted 10–15 cm deep in well-drained, fertile, humus-rich soil that is not overly dry. While frost-hardy to -10 °C, it requires protection from waterlogged conditions and strong winds. Deep rooting can make the plant difficult to remove if necessary. It was awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 1948 and 1993. Due to its late flowering time, it rarely hybridizes. Bulbs prefer not to be disturbed and can be challenging to transplant. Aphids can be a significant problem. Cultivation typically involves full sun to part shade exposure, medium water requirements, and soil with medium to fast drainage.CC BY-SA 4.0
