Estimated Native Range
Summary
Utricularia aurea, commonly known as Golden Bladderwort, is a medium- to large-sized suspended aquatic carnivorous plant. It is native to shallow, nutrient-poor, freshwater wetlands and rice paddies in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, including India, Japan, and extending to northern Australia. The plant typically floats just below the water surface, with its foliage spread out in a rosette form. Golden Bladderwort is notable for its small, bright yellow flowers that bloom from late spring to early autumn, adding a splash of color to water gardens. The flowers are quite showy, rising above the water on slender stalks.
Golden Bladderwort is valued for its unique carnivorous nature, which allows it to supplement nutrient intake by trapping tiny aquatic organisms in its bladder-like traps. This adaptation makes it suitable for cultivation in water gardens and ponds where it can help control mosquito larvae. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, in still or slow-moving water bodies with acidic to neutral pH. While it does not require substrate to grow, it can be anchored in a loose, organic-rich medium if desired. In cultivation, it is important to maintain clean water conditions to prevent algal overgrowth that can compete with the plant for nutrients and light.CC BY-SA 4.0
