Estimated Native Range
Summary
Utricularia graminifolia, commonly known as Grassleaf Bladderwort, is a small perennial carnivorous plant native to wetlands, rice paddies, and slow-moving streams across Asia, including Burma, China, India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. It thrives in shallow water or saturated soils and is adapted to nutrient-poor conditions, capturing small organisms with its bladder-like traps. This species is found from lowland areas up to elevations of 4921 feet in Burma. Typically, it forms a mat of bright green, grass-like leaves, which can be submerged or floating, depending on the water level.
Grassleaf Bladderwort is valued for its unique carnivorous nature and is often used in aquariums and paludariums where it provides an interesting visual element and helps control algae. It requires consistently moist or aquatic conditions, bright indirect light, and a nutrient-poor, acidic substrate to thrive. It can be challenging to cultivate due to its specific requirements but is rewarding for enthusiasts of carnivorous plants. Care should be taken when introducing Utricularia graminifolia to new areas, as it has the potential to become invasive outside its native range.CC BY-SA 4.0
