Estimated Native Range
Summary
Vachellia vernicosa, commonly known as Viscid Acacia, is a semi-deciduous shrub native to arid and semi-arid regions, including desert grasslands and scrublands in the Southwestern United States and Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 7-10 feet (2.1-3 meters) and a width of 5-6 feet (1.5-1.8 meters). This shrub is characterized by its sticky, green foliage and thorny branches. The yellow flowers, which bloom in the spring and summer, are small but numerous, creating a showy display that attracts pollinators such as bees.
Viscid Acacia is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in challenging environments, making it suitable for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings in arid regions. It is also used for erosion control due to its extensive root system. In cultivation, it requires minimal maintenance, preferring full sun to part shade and well-drained soils. While it is tolerant of poor soils, it benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods. Gardeners should be aware that the thorns can make handling the plant difficult, and it may not be suitable for areas with heavy foot traffic.CC BY-SA 4.0
