Summary
Valeriana pauciflora, commonly known as Largeflower Valerian, is a perennial herb native to nutrient-rich, mesic forests, stream valleys or lower slopes in the Eastern United States. It typically grows to a height of 2 to 4 feet (0.6 to 1.2 meters) and spreads 1 to 2 feet (0.3 to 0.6 meters). The plant features clusters of fragrant, white to light pink flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer, which are highly attractive to pollinators, although it can also self-pollinate. The foliage is deep green, and the plant has a clumping form.
Largeflower Valerian is valued for its showy flowers and pleasant fragrance, making it a desirable addition to woodland gardens, naturalized areas, and shaded borders. It prefers partial to full shade and requires moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. While it is not drought-tolerant, it can thrive with consistent moisture. In cultivation, it is relatively low-maintenance but may need protection from excessive winter wetness. This species is not commonly found in nurseries but is sought after by native plant enthusiasts.CC BY-SA 4.0
