Summary
Vancouveria hexandra, commonly known as White Inside-Out Flower, is a perennial herb native to the understory of moist, shady coniferous forests, particularly those dominated by Douglas fir, in the Pacific Northwest of North America. This includes regions in southwestern British Columbia, western Washington and Oregon, and northwestern California. Vancouveria hexandra typically grows 20–40 centimeters (8–16 inches) in height and forms dense patches with compound leaves arranged in groups of three. The plant is notable for its small, delicate white flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. The flowers have petal-like sepals that are reflexed, giving the appearance of being swept back or turned inside out, which is the origin of its common name.
The White Inside-Out Flower is valued for its unique floral display and its ability to thrive in shaded garden areas where other plants may struggle. It is often used as a ground cover in woodland gardens, shaded borders, and naturalized areas. The plant prefers part shade to full shade, consistent moisture, and well-drained soils with rich organic matter. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot if drainage is poor. Vancouveria hexandra is also appreciated for its resistance to deer browsing, making it a suitable choice for gardens in areas with high deer populations.CC BY-SA 4.0
