Summary
Verbena halei, commonly known as Texas vervain or slender verbena, is a perennial herb native to prairies, open woodlands, and roadsides in the southern United States, particularly Texas, and extending into Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters) and spreads 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). Texas vervain has a slender, erect growth habit with small, narrow leaves and clusters of tiny, tubular, lavender to purple flowers that bloom prolifically from March to June, attracting butterflies and other pollinators.
Texas vervain is valued for its long flowering season and ability to thrive in hot, dry conditions, making it suitable for xeriscaping and wildflower gardens. It is often used in borders, rock gardens, and as a filler in mixed plantings. This plant prefers full sun to part shade and is tolerant of a variety of soil types, provided they are well-drained. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew in humid conditions. Texas vervain can self-seed and spread in the garden, which can be both a benefit for naturalistic plantings and a concern for its potential to become weedy.CC BY-SA 4.0
