Summary
Vernonia glauca, commonly known as Broad-Leaved Ironweed, is a deciduous perennial herb native to open woodlands and meadows in the Eastern United States. It typically grows to a height of 3-5 feet (0.9-1.5 meters) and a width of 2-4 feet (0.6-1.2 meters). Broad-Leaved Ironweed has a clumping form with stiff, upright stems and lance-shaped, deep green leaves. From late summer to fall, it produces dense clusters of tiny, fluffy, purple flowers that are highly attractive to butterflies and other pollinators.
This plant is valued for its vibrant purple flowers and its ability to thrive in a variety of garden settings, including borders, native plant gardens, and meadowscapes. It is relatively low maintenance, tolerating poor soil and drought once established. Broad-Leaved Ironweed is often used to add late-season color to gardens and can be an important nectar source for insects when other flowers have faded. It prefers full sun to part shade and adapts well to medium to well-drained soils. While generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to rust and powdery mildew in humid conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
