Estimated Native Range
Summary
Veronica beccabunga, commonly known as European speedwell or brooklime, is a succulent, herbaceous perennial plant native to stream banks, marshes, and wet meadows in Europe, North Africa, and Asia. It typically forms low-growing mats reaching 6 to 20 inches (15-50 cm) in height. The plant features fleshy, bright green leaves and small, bright blue to violet flowers that bloom from May to August, adding a subtle charm to water gardens and moist landscapes.
Brooklime is valued for its ease of maintenance and its ability to thrive in wet conditions, making it suitable for planting along pond edges, in bog gardens, and as part of rain garden designs. It prefers consistently moist to wet soils and can grow in full sun to part shade. While it is not particularly drought-tolerant, it can survive temporary dry spells. In cultivation, it can be used as a ground cover or as an accent plant in water features. Gardeners should be aware that Veronica beccabunga can spread vigorously in ideal conditions and may require control measures to prevent it from becoming too dominant.CC BY-SA 4.0
