Estimated Native Range
Summary
Veronica scutellata, commonly known as marsh speedwell, skullcap speedwell, or grassleaf speedwell, is a rhizomatous perennial herb native to a variety of wetland habitats including marshes, fens, wet meadows, and along the margins of ponds and streams in temperate Asia, Europe, northern Africa, and northern North America. It typically grows up to 24 inches tall and features lance-shaped leaves with racemes of small, delicate flowers that can be white, blue, or purplish, blooming from late spring to mid-summer. The flowers are not particularly showy but add a subtle charm to wetland plantings.
Marsh speedwell is valued for its ability to thrive in wet conditions, making it suitable for rain gardens, water features, and naturalized wetland areas. It can also be used to stabilize soil in riparian zones. This plant prefers consistently moist to wet soils and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to part shade. While it is not known for significant pest or disease problems, it can be susceptible to root rot if the soil is not adequately wet. Veronica scutellata is not typically aggressive but can spread in ideal wet conditions, contributing to the biodiversity of wetland ecosystems.CC BY-SA 4.0
