Estimated Native Range
Summary
Veronica strictissima, commonly known as Banks Peninsula Hebe, is an evergreen shrub native to the rocky coasts and alpine regions of New Zealand, particularly the Banks Peninsula. It typically grows to a height of up to 2 meters and features a compact, bushy habit with stiff, upright branches. The leaves are glossy, dark green, and spear-shaped, contributing to the plant’s dense foliage. During the summer months, it produces spikes of white flowers that are attractive to bees and butterflies. The flowers are modest in size but can be quite numerous, creating a showy display against the dark foliage.
Banks Peninsula Hebe is valued for its hardiness and low maintenance, making it suitable for coastal gardens where it can tolerate salt spray, as well as alpine rockeries. It is often used in ornamental plantings, borders, and as a low hedge. This hebe prefers well-drained soil, and while it can tolerate partial shade, it flourishes in full sun where its flowering potential is maximized. It is relatively drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry periods. There are no major disease problems, but it may be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. It is also frost-tolerant, making it a versatile choice for various garden settings.CC BY-SA 4.0
