Estimated Native Range
Summary
Viburnum davidii, commonly known as David viburnum, is an evergreen shrub native to China, where it thrives in the understory of forests and along forest margins. It typically grows to 1.5 meters (5 feet) tall and broad, featuring large, glossy, dark green, oval leaves up to 15 cm (6 inches) long. The shrub produces round clusters of tiny white flowers in late spring, which are modestly showy and attract pollinators. By late summer and autumn, these flowers give way to distinctive oval blue fruits, but only if both male and female plants are present, as the species is dioecious.
David viburnum is valued for its attractive foliage, which provides year-round interest, and its blue fruits, which can add a splash of color to the garden. It is suitable for a variety of landscape uses, including urban planting, border planting, and as a ground cover. This shrub is relatively low-maintenance, preferring full sun to part shade, medium water, and well-drained soils. It is also tolerant of urban pollution, making it a good choice for city gardens. While it has no major disease issues, it can occasionally suffer from viburnum beetle and leaf spot.CC BY-SA 4.0
