Summary

Viburnum propinquum, commonly known as Chinese Evergreen Viburnum, is an evergreen shrub native to forest margins, open woodlands, and scrub areas in central and southern China, Taiwan, and Luzon in the Philippines. It typically grows to a height of 6-8 feet with a similar spread, forming a dense, rounded shape. The shrub features glossy, leathery leaves and small, white, fragrant flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. The flowers are followed by red berries that mature to black, providing visual interest and attracting birds.

Chinese Evergreen Viburnum is valued for its year-round foliage and its ability to adapt to a range of soil types, from clay to loam, and to tolerate both acidic and alkaline pH. It is hardy to USDA zone 7 and is often used in urban landscaping, as a hedge or screen, and in mixed shrub borders for its low maintenance and durability. The shrub prefers full sun to part shade and requires moderate watering, with good drainage to prevent root rot. While generally pest and disease resistant, it can occasionally suffer from viburnum leaf beetle infestations.CC BY-SA 4.0
