Estimated Native Range
Summary
Vinca difformis, commonly known as Intermediate Periwinkle or White Periwinkle, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the Mediterranean, specifically thriving in open woodlands, forest edges, and scrub areas. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 1-1.5 feet (0.3-0.5 meters) and spreads 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters) wide. The plant features glossy, dark green leaves and produces an abundance of white, star-shaped flowers with a prominent central eye that are particularly showy during the blooming seasons of spring and winter.
Intermediate Periwinkle is valued for its extended flowering period, evergreen foliage, and ability to cover ground quickly, making it an excellent choice for ground cover, suppressing weeds, and stabilizing soil on slopes or banks. It is also used in border planting and urban gardens for its low maintenance and adaptability to various conditions. Vinca difformis prefers full sun to part shade and grows best in medium draining clay, loam, or sandy soils with medium water requirements. While it is generally disease-resistant, it can sometimes suffer from root rot in overly wet conditions. Additionally, it can be invasive outside its native range, so gardeners should consult local regulations before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
