Summary
Viola palustris, commonly known as Marsh Violet, is an evergreen perennial herb native to cool temperate regions, including the moist meadows, bogs, and streambanks of North America, as well as similar habitats in Europe and Asia. It typically grows 5 to 22 cm tall, emerging from slender rhizomes. The foliage is glabrous, with petioles and peduncles that support the delicate flowers. The blooms, appearing from late spring to early summer, are white to lilac in color, measuring 10 to 13 mm in length, and feature distinctive purple lines on the lower three petals, which serve as nectar guides for pollinators.
Marsh Violet is valued for its charming flowers and its ability to thrive in wet, marshy conditions, making it an excellent choice for water gardens, bog gardens, and naturalized areas. It is also used in shaded rock gardens and woodland gardens, where its evergreen leaves provide year-round interest. While it prefers consistently moist soil, it can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to part shade. Gardeners should be mindful of its preference for cool, moist environments and provide adequate water, especially in drier climates.CC BY-SA 4.0
