Summary

Vitis cinerea, commonly known as Graybark Grape, also referred to as Winter Grape or Possum Grape, is a deciduous vine native to a variety of habitats including open woodlands, forest edges, and along streams in the eastern half of the United States, from Texas to Illinois and Florida. It is particularly prevalent in Missouri and Louisiana. The vine can climb to heights of 33-49 feet (10-15 meters) when supported. Graybark Grape is characterized by its cordiform-emarginate (heart-shaped with a notch at the tip), flabby, and dull leaves with blunt teeth. It produces clusters of small, black berries that are juicy but seedy and tough-skinned, typically ripening in late summer to fall.

The berries of Vitis cinerea are not commonly harvested for commercial use due to their tough skin and seeds, but they can provide food for wildlife. The vine is sometimes used in native plant gardens or for naturalizing areas, and it can be trained on trellises or arbors. It prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types, from sandy to loamy to clay. Full sun to part shade is ideal for this vine. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to common grape diseases such as powdery mildew and black rot. Gardeners should also be aware that it can become invasive if not managed properly, spreading through root suckers and self-seeding.CC BY-SA 4.0
