Vitis cinerea var. helleri, commonly known as Heller’s Grape, is a deciduous perennial vine native to the southern United States and northern Mexico, where it thrives in moist woodlands, along streams, and in rocky areas. It can rapidly grow to a height and width of 10-20 feet (3-6 meters). This vine is characterized by its heart-shaped leaves and inconspicuous green or yellow flowers that bloom in the spring and summer, followed by clusters of small, dark purple grapes that are edible and attract wildlife.

Heller’s Grape is valued for its ability to cover structures quickly, making it suitable for trellises, arbors, and fences. It is also used for erosion control on slopes. The vine is adaptable to a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, and prefers part shade but can tolerate full sun. It requires medium amounts of water and benefits from soils with good drainage. While it is not known for significant disease problems, it can be susceptible to pests like aphids and leafhoppers.
