Estimated Native Range
Summary
Warszewiczia coccinea, commonly known as Chaconia or Wild Poinsettia, is an evergreen ornamental tree native to the rainforests of Trinidad and Tobago, Central America and south to Bolivia. It is the national flower of Trinidad and Tobago. This species typically grows to a height of 10-15 feet (3-4.5 meters) with a similar spread. The Chaconia is notable for its bright red bracts that surround the small, inconspicuous yellow flowers, which bloom throughout the year with peaks around late summer to early fall. The flowers are not particularly showy, but the red bracts are quite striking and resemble those of the poinsettia.
The Chaconia is valued for its vibrant red bracts and is often used in tropical landscaping for its ornamental appeal. It serves well as a specimen plant or in mixed shrub borders. In cultivation, it requires well-drained, fertile soil and thrives in full sun to partial shade. Regular watering is necessary, especially in dry periods, but the plant is relatively low-maintenance once established. The double Chaconia cultivar, with a double row of bracts, is especially popular for its fuller appearance. Propagation is typically done through cuttings, as seed propagation has proven unsuccessful. While generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
