Summary
Wikstroemia genkwa, commonly known as Genkwa or Yuan Hua, is a deciduous shrub native to a variety of habitats in Eastern Asia, including forest margins, thickets on mountain slopes, and grassy areas. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height and width of 2-4 feet (0.6-1.2 meters). The plant features lance-shaped leaves and is particularly noted for its clusters of tubular, yellow flowers that bloom in the spring, providing a showy display. The bark of Genkwa is fibrous and has been used in traditional paper-making.
Genkwa is valued for its ornamental flowers and is used in gardens and landscapes for border planting, as a specimen shrub, or in mass plantings for a dramatic effect. It is relatively easy to maintain, requiring medium amounts of water and thriving in full sun to part shade. Genkwa prefers well-drained soils, including clay, loam, or sandy types. While it is generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly draining soils. This shrub is also used in traditional Chinese medicine, and its components have been studied for various pharmacological effects.CC BY-SA 4.0
