Summary

Wollemia nobilis, commonly known as Wollemi Pine, is a rare evergreen tree that can reach heights of 25–40 meters (82–131 feet). It was presumed extinct until its rediscovery in 1994 in a remote series of narrow, steep-sided sandstone gorges within Wollemi National Park, Australia. The Wollemi Pine’s bark is particularly notable, being dark brown and knobbly, often likened to the appearance of Coco Pops cereal. Seedlings grow slowly, but mature trees are extremely long-lived, with some individuals estimated to be between 500 and 1,000 years old. The species is part of a plant family that dates back to the time of the dinosaurs.

The Wollemi Pine is valued for its unique appearance and potential as an ornamental tree. It is suitable for planting in open ground or in large containers, making it versatile for landscape design. Despite its prehistoric origins and limited natural distribution, the Wollemi Pine has shown adaptability to a range of climates, tolerating temperatures from −5 to 45 °C (23 to 113 °F). It can grow in full sun to full shade, but prefers part shade. The tree is easy to maintain, requiring medium water and well-drained soil. It is also suitable for indoor cultivation, as it tolerates air conditioning, making it an attractive option for indoor decorative use. In outdoor settings, it thrives in full sun to semi-shaded positions and can be kept in a pot indefinitely, which controls its growth. The Wollemi Pine may take up to 25 years to reach 20 feet in height when potted. Potential problems include its rarity and the need for conservation, as it is an endangered species.CC BY-SA 4.0
