Estimated Native Range
Summary
Woodwardia radicans, commonly known as Rooting Chainfern, is an evergreen perennial fern native to shaded, moist, and forested ravines as well as along streams in the Mediterranean region and the Azores. It can reach a height of 6 feet (1.8 meters) and a width of 2 feet (0.6 meters). This fern is characterized by its large, arching fronds and the ability to form plantlets at the tip of the fronds, which can root upon touching the soil. The fronds are bright green and can add a lush, tropical feel to gardens.
Rooting Chainfern is valued for its dramatic foliage and is often used in shaded or woodland gardens, as well as in containers for patios and conservatories. It has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, indicating its excellence for garden use. While it prefers partial to full shade, it can tolerate full sun if kept moist. It requires consistently medium moisture and well-drained soil to thrive. Due to its sensitivity to cold, in regions prone to frost, it should be grown in a sheltered location or overwintered indoors.CC BY-SA 4.0
