Summary

Wyethia angustifolia, commonly known as California compassplant or narrowleaf mule’s ears, is a perennial herb that is part of the aster family. It is native to the Pacific Northwest of the USA and also to the chaparral and open woodlands of California, particularly in the Sierra Nevada and northern regions. It typically grows from a tough taproot and caudex unit, producing a stem 30 to 90 centimeters tall. The plant is characterized by its large, sunflower-like flower heads that sit atop hairy stems, with each head featuring narrow, hairy phyllaries at the base. It boasts up to 21 yellow ray florets, each up to 4.5 centimeters long, surrounding numerous yellow disc florets. The fruit is an achene, which may be nearly 2 centimeters long, including its pappus.

Wyethia angustifolia is valued for its showy, bright yellow flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer, adding a splash of color to garden settings. It is often used in native plant gardens, restoration projects, and as a border plant. This species thrives in full sun and requires medium amounts of water, preferring well-drained soils. While it is relatively low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. Gardeners should note that it may spread via seeds, but it is not typically aggressive or invasive.CC BY-SA 4.0
