Summary

Yucca aloifolia, commonly known as Aloe Yucca, is an evergreen succulent native to coastal dunes, barrier islands, and sandy soils of the Southeastern USA and Mexico. It is a tree-like plant with an erect trunk, 3–5 inches (7.6–12.7 cm) in diameter, reaching heights of 5–20 feet (1.5–6.1 m). The trunk may become top-heavy and topple over, at which point the tip reorients and continues to grow. Yucca aloifolia is notable for its terminal spike of showy white, sometimes purplish-tinged flowers, each about 4 inches (10 cm) across, which appear in late spring to summer. After flowering, the trunk ceases to grow, but lateral buds form and create new shoots, contributing to the plant’s thicket-forming habit in its native scrub and beach environments.

The Aloe Yucca is valued for its architectural form, showy flowers, and low maintenance requirements. It is often used in xeriscaping, as a focal point in gardens, and for coastal landscaping due to its tolerance of salt and wind. It thrives in full sun, requires minimal water once established, and prefers well-drained sandy soils. While generally pest-free, it can suffer from root rot if overwatered. It is also resistant to deer and can be used as a protective barrier due to its sharp leaves.CC BY-SA 4.0
