Summary

Yucca flaccida, commonly known as Adam’s Needle, is an evergreen perennial succulent native to the southeastern United States, where it is found in sandy soils of coastal plains and open woodlands. It typically grows to 55 cm (22 in) tall and 150 cm (59 in) wide, forming a basal rosette of sharply pointed, swordlike leaves that can reach up to 55 cm (22 in) in length. During the summer, it produces striking 150 cm (59 in) long panicles of bell-shaped, creamy white flowers that rise above the foliage, adding a dramatic vertical element to the garden. The flowers are particularly showy and attract a variety of pollinators.

Adam’s Needle is appreciated for its architectural form and low maintenance requirements, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and as a focal point in drought-tolerant landscapes. It is also used in coastal areas due to its tolerance of salt and wind. The cultivars ’Golden Sword’ and ’Ivory’ are notable for their variegated foliage and have received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. This plant thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, and once established, it has very low water needs. It is generally free from serious pests and diseases but can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
