Summary
Yucca luminosa, commonly known as Blue Yucca or Silver-Leaf Yucca, is a slow-growing evergreen shrub native to the Chihuahuan Desert in northern Mexico. It typically inhabits rocky slopes, limestone scrubland, and semi-desert areas at elevations between 3,300 and 8,200 feet. This species can reach a height of 10-13 feet with a trunk up to 8 inches in diameter, and it features rigid, powdery blue leaves that are up to 3.3 feet long and arranged in a dense, symmetrical rosette. The leaves have sharp tips and edges that can be dangerous if not handled with care. During the late spring to early summer, Yucca luminosa produces striking white flowers on towering inflorescences that can reach 3.3-6.6 feet tall, which are highly attractive to pollinators such as moths.
Blue Yucca is valued for its architectural form and striking blue foliage, which adds a dramatic accent to xeriscapes, rock gardens, and desert-themed landscapes. It is also used as a focal point in contemporary garden designs. This yucca is drought-tolerant, requiring minimal maintenance once established, and prefers full sun exposure. It thrives in well-drained soils, particularly sandy or gravelly substrates, and is tolerant of poor soils as long as they are not waterlogged. While generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered. It is not known for aggressive roots or significant disease problems.CC BY-SA 4.0
