Estimated Native Range
Summary
Zaluzianskya ovata, commonly known as Night Phlox, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the montane grasslands and rocky slopes of South Africa. It typically grows to 50 cm (20 in) in both height and width. Night Phlox has slightly sticky, lance-shaped leaves and produces notched, white daisy-like flowers with contrasting maroon to red backs. These blooms are particularly fragrant at night, releasing a sweet scent that attracts nocturnal pollinators. The flowering season extends from late spring to early fall, with the flowers closing during the day and opening in the evening.
Night Phlox is celebrated for its intense nighttime fragrance and delicate flowers, making it a popular choice for evening gardens, borders, and containers. It requires protection from frost and is often treated as an annual in cooler climates. For optimal growth, it should be planted in a location with full sun exposure, in well-drained soil with moderate moisture. While it is relatively easy to maintain, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. Night Phlox is not known for aggressive roots or significant disease issues, but it may be prone to aphids and spider mites. It is not typically invasive when grown outside its native range, but gardeners should always monitor for unexpected spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
