Summary

Zelkova sinica, commonly known as Chinese Zelkova, is a deciduous tree native to a variety of habitats in Eastern Asia, including open woodlands and forest edges. It can grow to a height of 50-80 feet (15-24 meters) and a width of 40-50 feet (12-15 meters). The tree has a vase-shaped growth habit with a spreading canopy that provides dappled shade. Its leaves are ovate to oblong-elliptic with serrated margins, turning shades of yellow, orange, or red in the fall. The small, inconspicuous greenish flowers appear in spring, followed by non-showy drupes. The bark is distinctive, with a smooth, gray surface that exfoliates to reveal orange patches, adding winter interest.

Chinese Zelkova is valued for its attractive bark, tolerance of urban conditions, and its ability to provide shade. It is used in urban plantings, as a street tree, and in parks. This species is adaptable to a range of soil types, provided they are well-drained. It is also relatively drought-tolerant once established. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate part shade. There are no major disease or pest issues, but it can be susceptible to Dutch elm disease. It is not known to be invasive outside its native range.CC BY-SA 4.0
