Summary

Zephyranthes drummondii, commonly known as Prairie Lily or Rain Lily, is a deciduous perennial herb native to grasslands, prairies, and open woodlands in the Southeastern United States, particularly Texas, as well as Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 0.7-0.8 feet (0.2-0.2 meters) and spreads about 1 foot (0.3 meters). The plant forms clumps of narrow, strap-like leaves and produces showy, funnel-shaped flowers that are white with a pink blush, blooming profusely after rain from late spring to summer.

Prairie Lily is valued for its drought tolerance and the burst of color it provides following rainfall, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, borders, and naturalized areas. It is also suitable for container planting. This species prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade and requires well-drained soils. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to bulb rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. Zephyranthes drummondii is not known for aggressive roots or significant disease problems, but it can be sensitive to overwatering. It is not typically invasive when grown outside its native range.CC BY-SA 4.0
