Summary
Zephyranthes minuta, commonly known as Zephyranthes grandiflora, is a bulb-forming perennial herb native to grasslands and open areas in Mexico and Guatemala. It has also naturalized in parts of the southeastern United States. This plant typically grows to a height of 6-10 inches (15-25 cm) with a similar spread. It features glossy, narrow, green leaves and large, showy, pink, funnel-shaped flowers that can reach up to 3.5 inches in length. The flowers bloom in late summer to early fall, often after heavy rains, which has earned it the common name "rain lily."
Zephyranthes minuta is valued for its ease of maintenance and the bright splash of color it provides when in bloom. It is often used in borders, rock gardens, and as a ground cover. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils, although it is tolerant of a range of soil types. Regular watering during the growing season is beneficial, but the plant can tolerate periods of drought once established. It is generally free from serious pests and diseases but can be susceptible to bulb rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. Zephyranthes minuta has been recognized with the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for its ornamental value and performance in gardens.CC BY-SA 4.0
